Toward the end of this year, my wife Mielle and I will begin documenting our transition into what’s commonly known as early retirement - but not the kind you're used to hearing about: we’re doing it without a pension, without a home, without a trust fund, and without any form of meaningful income.
Along the way, we’ll be implementing a concept we call alternatirement - an alternative approach to retirement that challenges conventional thinking in favor of a more affordable, sustainable way to live.
We’ll share everything as it happens - the highs, the lows, and everything in between. Our hope is that by showing what works - and what doesn’t, we'll help you shape your own version of retirement: one that feels right for you.
In short, this doesn't have to be just our journey - it could be your's too!

... but why alternatirement?
In today’s financial climate, daily life and the prospect of retirement can feel increasingly stressful and uncertain. Many people find themselves caught in a cycle of working longer hours to maintain an unnecessarily expensive lifestyle - often sacrificing the very freedom and time that can contribute so much to a meaningful and enjoyable life.
alternatirement offers a different approach - especially for those with a spirit of adventure.
At its core, alternatirement is a proactive, non-traditional approach to retirement - and beyond - that prioritizes affordability, healthy living, longevity and financial sustainability. It can mean stepping away from full-time work sooner, embracing flexible living arrangements, and exploring a global or unconventional lifestyle focused on freedom, purpose, and well-being.
When you're young, its easy to think of retirement as something to worry about later. But a subtle shift in perspective early on can make a big difference down the road - no matter where you're starting from.
On our upcoming website, we’ll share the steps we took to prepare - and the mindset that shaped our approach along the way. Even though we started from modest means, that mindset is what now makes a journey like this possible - and it could for you too!
So even if you're in your 20's - take a look at what we're doing. You might be surprised by what resonates.
... and even if you're already retired or soon will be, we'll explore subtle shifts in perspective that can help transform a daunting prospect into something much more manageable - and maybe even exciting.
