You were auto-subscribed to date and a promise – one with an enormous impact on your life – and the kicker is … you never consciously to agreed to it.
Work hard, do what you’re told, stay out of trouble – and if you’re patient, one day you’ll wake up retired: free, financially secure, with sufficient mental and physical health to enjoy the rest of your days.

Unfortunately, an increasing number of people are realizing the cost/benefit ratio of the commitment required is not what it used to be. Not because it’s inherently bad, but because it’s failed too many people, too many times – and if that wasn’t already enough … it’s about to get a whole lot worse.
So we made up a word for the alternative we’ve been living instead: alternatirement.
It’s not one-size-fits-all. It’s not for everybody, and it isn’t easy – and it comes with no instructions. We won’t tell you where to go, what to do, or how to live. What we’ll share is an approach – built around cost-effectiveness, around asking what a choice costs – and what it actually returns. – that you apply to your own life, your own desires, your own destination. That’s how you dispense with the auto-subscription.
alternatirement covers the whole arc of life, not just the years commonly called retirement.
It covers the years you build your options, the years you use them, and the final choices you’ll inevitably need to make – ideally, while you still can.
For the past year we’ve been putting the concept through its paces on the road – and one year in, it’s still evolving.
This website is the “almost”-live account of the experiment: how we got to this point, what’s working, what isn’t, and where we go from here.
Come along for the ride – and see whether the approach, applied to your own choices, can help you chart your own path to a destination of your choosing.
Our full introduction explains more, how the transitions fit together, and why we stopped believing in the old promise.
